Although the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has fully implemented its new registration system, Motus, for motor carriers, brokers, and other users, the system has been overwhelmed by carriers attempting to log on to validate their credentials. Problems have been reported with carriers trying to link their DOT number to their records in the system.

DOT intends to use the Motus portal for registration of hazmat carriers and shippers as well, but that process has been delayed for this year. All hazmat motor carriers and shippers must register and pay a fee by July 1 each year. For this registration year, registrants are advised to use the traditional registration process that has been in effect through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration for a number of years.
