OESP ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR
DAVE NELSEN SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The National Association of Oil &
Energy Service Professionals (OESP) is
still accepting applications for the Dave
Nelsen Scholarship Program. “The oil and
energy industry is continually looking for
qualified technicians,” says Judy Garber,
OESP Executive Director. “OESP’s mission
is education, and we’re taking the lead by
supporting our future technicians through
annual scholarships.”
The Dave Nelsen Scholarship Fund
was established in 1999. Since then, over
$191,000 in awards have been presented
to students interested in pursuing their
careers in the energy-service industry. This
marks the Scholarship’s fourteenth year and
OESP, along with industry partners, plans
to award a minimum of four $5,000 awards.
The Scholarship is funded by an annual golf
tournament held during OESP’s Annual
Convention.
Each scholarship applicant is required
to write a 500-word essay answering the
following questions: “What are your goals
in the oil-and-energy service field, and
what appeals to you about the oil-and-
energy industry?” Applicants must also
complete a form that may assist them in
the writing of their essay. The deadline
for receipt of the application and essay is
Friday, March 1, 2013.
OESP’s panel of judges will review the
submitted applications. Winners will be
notified and invited to attend the Awards
Banquet, held on Tuesday evening during
OESP’s 60th Annual Convention &
Trade Show from May 19-23, 2013 at the
HERSHEY
®
Lodge
in Hershey, PA.

NATIONAL GRID EXPANDS
SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE
National Grid is teaming with Opower to
roll out a new social media program, Social
Energy, that encourages residential cus-
tomers to use energy more efficiently. Some
of National Grid’s residential customers
will receive regular home energy reports
through mail and e-mail showing personal
use of electricity. To cajole customers to
reduce electricity and join energy-saving
programs, the report will show comparisons
with more efficient homes as well as similar
households in the neighborhood. The site
allows residential customers to track their
energy use and compare their energy habits
and savings with friends or other homes like
theirs. There also are forums for sharing
energy-saving ideas. Rewards will be offered
for groups that meet energy-saving goals.
FISCAL CLIFF DEAL RESTORES
EFFICIENCY INCENTIVES
The Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 that
ended the Fiscal Cliff crisis retroactively
reinstated the 25C tax credits for highly effi-
cient HVAC and water heating equipment
that expired at the end of 2011. Specifically,
the bill extends the tax credits that expired in
2011 from January 1, 2012, until December
31, 2013, for qualified equipment listed in
Section 25C of the Internal Revenue Code.
Because the credits were made retroactive to
January 1, 2012, they can be used for quali-
fied equipment that was installed any time
after December 31, 2011. Qualified equip-
ment includes the following.
Water Heaters ($300 Tax Credit):
Electric
heat pump water heaters with an energy factor
of at least 2.0; natural gas, propane, or oil water
heater with an energy factor of at least 0.82 or a
thermal efficiency of at least 90 percent.
