Data Security Compliance Document

MASSACHUSETTS OILHEAT COUNCIL

On March 1, 2010, a comprehensive data security law took effect in Massachusetts. This law applies to virtually all businesses and organizations in the Commonwealth and requires the security of paper and electronic records containing personal information such as debit and credit information or social security numbers. The failure to comply with this law carries the potential for substantial penalties.

Shaevel & Krems, LLP (NEFI-member) has developed a product to help bring our clients into compliance with the law. The cost of the product is $400 for NEFI-members ($600 for non-members) and it contains:

1. Compliance survey to help identify the areas of security vulnerability;
2. Form Written Information Security Plan (WISP);
3. Personal Information Policy (for employees);
4. Information Security Agreement (for vendors);
5. Laptop Policy;
6. Removable Data Policy;
7. Workbook for computer security;
8. Checklist for dealing with a security breach;
9. Form letters to the regulatory agencies and the customer/consumer/tenant/employee when there is a breach.

The computer security workbook was created by Dr. Brian Levine, a professor of computer science at UMass Amherst. It helps small and medium sized organizations secure their computers without spending tens of thousands of dollars on consultants.

This product will help bring your organization into compliance with the law.
