Heating Oil
Sales Dipped
Slightly in 2011
EIA’s annual report
pegs residential sales
at 3.6 billion gallons
THE LATEST ANNUAL REPORT ON FUEL OIL
& Kerosene Sales from the U.S. Energy
Information Administration (EIA) shows a
continuing slide in heating oil sales in 2011,
although many states saw little change in
total sales from 2010.
EIA reports that U.S. sales of No. 2 oil
in the residential sector totaled 3.64 billion
gallons, which marked a 5 percent decrease
from 2010. Sales in the six New England
states totaled 1.64 billions gallons – a 6.4
percent decrease from 2010. In the Central
Atlantic region, sales were also 1.64 billion
gallons, a 6.3 percent decrease.
Four New England states actually expe-
rienced small gains in total sales between
2010 and 2011: Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire and Vermont. Most states along
the East Coast experienced small decreases
in sales, while a few states experienced
notable drops. In New Jersey, sales dropped
13 percent, from 215 million gallons in 2010
to 187 million gallons in 2011. Maryland
saw a 19 percent decline in sales from 2010
to 2011, from 135 million gallons to 109
million gallons.
THE NEW TOP 10
The top 10 states for residential Oilheat
sales in 2011 were, in order, New York,
Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Connecticut,
Maine, New Jersey, New Hampshire,
Virginia, Maryland and Rhode Island.
While heating oil sales were down
slightly, total distillate sales increased in
2011, according to EIA. “Despite a mixture
of contending factors including continued
economic recovery, a warm winter, and
historic shifts in both domestic crude
