The biodiesel industry reached a record
milestone in 2013, officially surpassing
previous annual record production levels
with more than 1.35 billion gallons through
November, according to the National
Biodiesel Board (NBB). The previous record
was 1.1 billion gallons, produced in both
2011 and 2012. This new record comes as
the industry is fighting a proposed decrease
in support for the Renewable Fuel Standard.
Under the RFS, biodiesel and other
renewable diesel fuels combine to fill the
Biomass-Based Diesel category, which EPA
data shows a total of more than 1.56 billion
gallons produced.

The National Biodiesel Board (NBB)
reports that a group of U.S. Representatives
recently sent a letter calling on the Obama
Administration to support continued biod-
iesel industry growth in the Renewable Fuel
Standard. The effort was led by U.S. Reps.
Tom Latham, R-Iowa, and Mike McIntyre,
D-N.C., and represented a bipartisan group
representing districts from California to
Iowa to Florida.
The letter called on the Administration
to establish an RFS volume that is at least
consistent with anticipated 2013 produc-
tion of 1.7 billion gallons. The letter was
sent to the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and other Administration
officials, NBB reports.
“It is clear that biodiesel has been a
great RFS success story. It has exceeded RFS
targets in each year and is clearly poised to
do so again in 2013,” the lawmakers wrote.
“This type of reduction could have very
damaging repercussions. It could result in
dozens of biodiesel facilities shutting down
permanently and ceasing production.”
“We would strongly urge you to con-
tinue your support for this developing and
fragile industry with a reasonable increase
in the RFS volume requirement for 2014
and responsible growth in the future,” the
letter states.
