RHODE ISLAND ENACTS BIOHEAT
®
MANDATE
Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln D. Chaffee
last month signed into law the Biodiesel
Heating Oil Act of 2013, which mandates
the use of Bioheat in place of traditional
petroleum heating oil, according to the Oil
Heat Institute of Rhode Island. The new law
requires that all heating oil in Rhode Island
must contain at least 2 percent biofuel effec-
tive July 1, 2014; 3 percent effective July 1,
2015; 4 percent effective July 1, 2015; and 5
percent effective July 1, 2017.
The Rhode Island state Senate and
House passed the law with the full support
of the Office of Energy Resources and the
Department of Environmental Management.
The Oil Heat Institute strongly recommends
that heating oil dealers sign up as Bioheat
dealers at
and take advantage
of all the free materials available.
GAS LINE UPGRADE PROPOSED
FOR SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND
A Texas energy company is proposing
to install new pipelines, replace others and
build transmission stations for natural gas in
the 200-mile New York-to-Boston corridor,
according to a report by the Associated Press.
Algonquin Gas Transmissions, a unit of
Houston-based Spectra Energy, proposes to
build and replace about 44 miles of pipeline
in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York
and Rhode Island, install a new pipeline to
span the Hudson River in New York and
build compressor stations to boost gas flow,
according to the news agency. The project
would expand the current Algonquin
system and add 450,000 cubic feet of gas
per day to the 2 billion cubic feet now piped
in daily, the article states.
Intended to begin service Nov. 1, 2016,
the larger system is “designed to deliver
critically needed natural gas supplies that
will meet immediate and future supply”
in the Northeast, Algonquin said in its
proposal to the Federal Energy Regulatory
Commission. “Converting home heating
units and other appliances to natural gas
represents a substantial source of growth in
the region,” Algonquin said.
