The National Motor Freight Transportation Association has proposed a major proceeding, Public Docket 2025-1, to reclassify dozens of freight groups for truck transportation, including auto parts; cement; chemicals; boilers, furnaces and stoves; building materials; dental, hospital and medical supplies; drugs, medicines, and personal care products; electrical equipment; animal feed, foodstuffs; fruits and vegetables; furniture; oils; paints; petroleum products; plumbing supplies; printed materials; seeds; tools, etc.
The proposed reclassification relates to reconsideration of the density, handling, stowability and liability criteria for each class of goods. The expectation is that the product groups will be placed in a revised class that will result in increased freight rates for shippers using for-hire motor carriers.
Public comments on the proposal are due at NMFTA by February 25. A public hearing is scheduled for March 3.
