A report last week by WCVB5, Boston, detailed how homeowners are feeling left out in the cold after switching from oil or gas heat to electric heat pumps.
Despite Massachusetts' incentives to make the switch, homeowners are facing buyers' remorse after seeing how expensive it was to heat their homes this winter, and feel the state should have done more to lower the cost sooner.
In Massachusetts, the state said electric heat is the future, and since 2022 has been solely incentivizing a switch to electric heat pumps from fossil fuel heating systems. Heating with electricity is supposed to help the state meet its climate goals as an increasing share of New England's electricity comes from renewable sources.
However, these homeowners who have made the switch said getting there is proving painfully expensive, especially this winter, which saw very cold temperatures.
