Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a new interagency effort to attract more U.S. military veterans into pursuing careers in trucking. The new initiative is called Freedom Haulers, and will attempt to connect veterans with resources to seamlessly transition from service to driving a commercial motor vehicle.

The campaign will be led by DOT in coordination with the Department of Veteran Affairs, the Department of War, and the Department of Labor.

The Administration’s efforts to upgrade the standards for CDL drivers could lead to several hundred thousand drivers leaving the labor pool. These efforts include tightening requirements for non-domiciled CDLs, requiring CDL tests to be offered only in English, requiring drivers to be proficient in reading and speaking English, and cracking down on entry-level driver training schools.

Part of the argument to attract veterans is that the Veteran Administration’s tuition cap typically covers 100% of CDL training costs at colleges and technical schools for veterans who served for at least 36 months.
