The U.S. Department of Transportation announced the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is investing $217 million in U.S. trucking and bus industries to strengthen supply chains, remove fraudulent carriers, expand workforce opportunities, and improve roadway safety.

Multiple FMCSA grants will fund:

  • Support for states modernizing their CDL systems to ensure the qualification, training, and licensing of drivers.

  • Safety enforcement training for law enforcement officers.

  • Career training for current and former members of the U.S. Armed Forces transitioning into the trucking industry.

  • Deployment of innovative technologies, including increasing the effectiveness of enforcement in roadside inspections and investigations.

For example, according to DOT, the high priority grant program will target unsafe driving in areas identified as high-risk crash corridors, promote the safe and secure movement of hazardous materials, improve the safe transportation of goods and passengers in foreign commerce, demonstrate new technologies to improve CMV safety, support participation in the Performance Registration Information Systems Management (PRISM) program, support safety data improvement projects, and increase public awareness and education on CMV safety.
