United States Congress

On Friday, Congressman Nick Langworthy (R-NY-23) and five fellow New York Republicans, Reps. Nick LaLota, Nicole Malliotakis, Elise Stefanik, Mike Lawler, and Claudia Tenney, sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer urging a floor vote of the Energy Choice Act (H.R. 3699) as soon as possible.

The letter comes just after the Second Circuit upheld New York's All-Electric Buildings Act, the most sweeping building electrification mandate in the country. Without congressional action, the ruling gives every state a roadmap to ban the fuels our members deliver. The lawmakers point to New York's own grid operator, which warns that reliability violations could hit New York City as early as this year, Long Island in 2027, and the Lower Hudson Valley by 2030. Higher costs, a strained grid, and no choice for consumers is not a model Congress should let go national.

The bill now has 157 cosponsors and still awaits floor action. It does not force anyone to use a particular fuel; it simply stops state and local governments from banning access to lawful energy sources like the ones our members deliver.

We thank Congressman Langworthy and his colleagues for the letter and will keep pushing leadership to schedule the vote.
