Congress is in recess for the next two weeks for Easter and will not return until April 13. The partial government shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security is now in its 45th day and remains unresolved.
On Friday of last week, House Republicans passed a short-term funding bill in a 213-203 vote that would extend DHS appropriations through May 22, including funding for ICE and Customs and Border Protection. Speaker Johnson advanced the measure after rejecting a bipartisan Senate-passed bill that would have funded most of the department but excluded immigration enforcement agencies. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called this newest House bill "dead on arrival in the Senate," leaving no viable path forward until members return in mid-April, though leadership in both chambers could call members back early if a compromise emerges.
