In an address in Pennsylvania, President Trump said that the government would take steps to expedite CDLs for U.S. military veterans. He stated that anyone who has driven a truck in the military would automatically be eligible for a CDL, and that other veterans would be taught to drive a commercial vehicle.
The details of this plan have not been released, but it builds on ongoing efforts to cancel CDLs held by “non-domiciled” drivers who are not U.S. citizens and stricter enforcement of the English-language proficiency requirement. Many trucking companies have brought in foreign drivers on temporary work visas to address the driver shortage, and some states have also been willing to grant CDLs to undocumented immigrants. Some estimates put the percentage of immigrant CDL holders at close to 20%.
