Yesterday, NEFI joined with The National Propane Gas Association (NPGA) to transmit a letter to President Trump urging the extension of the administration’s Jones Act waiver through at least the end of 2026.

The current waiver is set to expire on August 17, just as distributors begin stockpiling for winter. The administration’s current waiver has provided measurable relief to both consumers and businesses that depend on the ability to move fuel between U.S. ports.

An independent analysis of the waiver's first 93 days found fuel moving to the markets that needed it most at many times historical volumes, underscoring the real economic burdens the Jones Act places on American businesses, consumers, and energy supply chains. Vessel movements climbed steadily throughout the period, using a waiver-eligible fleet roughly half the age of the traditional Jones Act fleet.

The Northeast is served by very few Jones Act tankers, which puts businesses and consumers at an even higher risk for distribution and cost-related issues. This letter to President Trump reinforces the April 23 coalition letter from 14 national associations prompting Congress to take action to permanently reform the Jones Act.

The letter is signed by 15 national, state, and regional trade associations representing the family-owned businesses that deliver propane, heating oil, and other fuels to more than eleven million American homes and businesses. The signing organizations are:
