On October 7, the Senate unanimously passed S. Res. 924, a bipartisan resolution from Senators Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Susan Collins of Maine designating that day as Energy Efficiency Day. The resolution notes that efficiency has drawn support from both parties for more than 50 years, through laws ranging from the Energy Policy and Conservation Act in the 1970s to the 2021 infrastructure law. It credits efficiency gains since the 1970s with avoiding more than $1 trillion a year in energy costs, cites more than 2.3 million Americans working in the efficiency sector, and notes that the U.S. now produces twice the economic output per unit of energy it did in 1980. The resolution carries no funding or policy changes, but it puts the Senate on record that cutting energy waste saves consumers billions on their utility bills each year, something our members deliver every day through high efficiency equipment, tune ups, and renewable liquid fuels. We will track whether the day is recognized again next year and look for ways to mark it going forward.
