The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced it will spend over $982 million in competitive grants for 521 projects across 48 states, 18 tribes, and Puerto Rico. The grants will support projects that improve intersection safety, build roundabouts, upgrade sidewalks, and strengthen emergency response services.
The Safe Streets and Roads for All program offers two types of grants: Planning and Demonstration Grants and Implementation Grants. Planning and Demonstration Grants support the development, completion, or enhancement of an Action Plan, while Implementation Grants fund projects or strategies aligned with an existing Action Plan to address roadway safety challenges.
In addition, DOT has removed DEI and environmental justice requirements installed in the Biden administration. According to DOT, these requirements were making it harder for communities to apply for these funds and delaying critical projects.
