Last week, NEFI once again participated in and sponsored the 2026 National LIHEAP Action Day in Washington, DC. The Action Day is an annual effort that brings together a diverse coalition of stakeholders to urge Congress to protect and maximize LIHEAP funding.

Participants included representatives from national heating fuel trade associations, public and private utilities, community action programs, and low-income advocacy groups. This year, organizations from all 50 states came to Capitol Hill to make their voices heard

Liam Dotson of NEFI met with congressional offices from Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Together with stakeholders from across the country, we presented a united front in the fight to preserve funding for the program.

The urgency of this year's advocacy is amplified by the expectation that President Trump will once again propose to zero out LIHEAP funding, as he did during his first administration and last year. Elimination of federal LIHEAP funding would have severe repercussions for the vulnerable households that depend on the program for energy security. To support our efforts, we distributed state-specific fact sheets researched and provided by the National Energy & Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC), which organizes the annual event. Participants also shared NEUAC's All Parties Letter with congressional offices across the Hill.

NEFI’s participation in the 2026 LIHEAP Action Day reflects our ongoing commitment to advocating for policies that support energy affordability, energy security, and the reduction of energy poverty. It has never been more important for our industry to speak with one voice on behalf of the communities we serve.
