On Friday, November 28, state LIHEAP agencies began to receive their award letters from the department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Approximately 90% of LIHEAP funding, equaling $3.6 billion, as well as $100 million in supplemental funding, has been released to states, tribes and territories, enabling them to start distributing funds.
Timing for when Community Action Program agencies will begin accepting and approving applications will still vary by state, so LIHEAP-participating dealers should continue to maintain close communication with state heating fuel associations, relevant government offices, and CAP agencies to stay informed and prepared.
Throughout the year, NEFI conducted an unprecedented level of advocacy in support of LIHEAP and federal funding. This includes a national “call to action,” participation in national LIHEAP Advocacy Day, and numerous meetings on Capitol Hill including with top Congressional leaders. Earlier this year, NEFI was appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Energy & Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC) – aka, the national LIHEAP coalition – and participated in numerous strategy sessions with national heating fuel and utility associations and other fuel assistance advocates.
